1. Ideation & Handbag Concept
Step 1: Dream Boldly
Start with a blank canvas and let your imagination flow. What does the perfect bag look like? Is it functional, stylish, or both? Consider who you're designing for and the lifestyle you want to cater to.
Step 2: Ground Your Vision
Take those dreams and give them structure. Sketch your ideas, write down the bag’s purpose, and identify your design ethos. This will become the foundation for every decision you make going forward.
2. CASM: Consumer Segment, Agony, Solution, Monetize
Step 1: Identify Your Audience
Who will love your bag? Define your consumer segment with precision—age, profession, lifestyle, and buying habits.
Step 2: Solve Their Problem
What’s their pain point (agony)? Create a bag that delivers a clear solution and ensure it’s priced to fit your monetization strategy.
3. Marketing Mix & Bag Brand Competitive Analysis
Step 1: Master the 5 Ps
Product, price, place, and promotion—craft a marketing strategy that connects the dots. What platforms will you use to showcase your bags, and how will you tell your story? And the final 5 in the middle - the person buying your bag!
Step 2: Research on the Competition
Analyze brands in your niche. What’s working for them? Where do they fall short? Let their wins and gaps inform your strategy.
4. Ethnography & Empathy: Understand Your Customer
Step 1: Walk in Their Shoes
Observe your target audience in their natural habitat. What bags are they carrying? What are they wearing?
Step 2: Listen & Learn
Conduct interviews or surveys to dive deeper into their needs and desires. The more you understand them, the better you’ll design for them.
5. Market Research to Design Your Bag to Sell
Step 1: Spot the Trends
Study market trends to ensure your designs are relevant but timeless. Pay attention to materials, colors, and silhouettes resonating in fashion circles. What appeals to you? Are you your own customer?
Step 2: Validate Demand
Gather data from your target market to confirm interest. Pre-orders or focus groups are great ways to ensure your bag will sell before you invest heavily. Remember, don’t play yourself into thinking that everyone is sick of their Gucci’s or Fendi’s and desperately wants a bag that nobody else has. They don’t. You are creating a new demand for a new item.
6. How to Iterate Your Bag from Prototype to Sample
Step 1: Start Small
Create a prototype to test your concept. This early version doesn’t need to be perfect but should convey your core idea. There is no need to get a sample made yet. Do your best to mock it up yourself. Use construction paper, muslin, or even an old handbag to visualize your bag better.
Step 2: Refine Relentlessly
Incorporate feedback to improve the design. Work closely with manufacturers to translate your vision into a polished sample.
7. Business Plan(ning) to Build Your Handbag Brand
Step 1: Define Your Mission
What does your brand stand for? Write a clear mission statement that will guide your business decisions.
Step 2: Map Out the Numbers
Outline your production costs, pricing strategy, and sales goals to ensure your handbag brand is financially sustainable.
8. Business Strategy Guide for Your Handbag Brand
Step 1: Think Long-Term
What does success look like in one year, five years, or ten years? Define milestones to keep you on track.
Step 2: Be Ready to Pivot
Stay flexible. If something isn’t working, use your research to make informed adjustments.
9. Out-of-the-Box Ways for Your Handbag to Stand Out
Step 1: Innovate with Design
Experiment with unique materials, unexpected shapes, or bold embellishments to make your bag unforgettable.
Step 2: Build Buzz Creatively
Think guerrilla marketing—pop-up events, influencer partnerships, or social media challenges that engage your audience. This is why you research the market and do a competitive analysis to learn creative ways to market your bag that isn’t advertising.
10. From Sketch to Sample to Shelf: Step by Step
Step 1: Polish Your Sketch
Ensure your designs are production-ready, with detailed specs and measurements.
Step 2: Plan Your Launch
Coordinate with manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to bring your bag to life and into customers’ hands. Now, you are ready to meet with a sample maker and get that bag made!
