I really grappled with sending this out or not. I haven’t actually posted on social media either, which, as we all know, is the baseline of monetization for what all of us do. The California fires have been a lot to watch, and I had to press pause when sending out handbag content. I was reluctant to post where and what to donate since it constantly changes, so I urge you to look and find the best place to help.
It’s been about a week, and I hope my posts can be a pick-me-up of some description for all that has been happening. One of my favorite topics is to talk about handbags that have retained their value and are making a comeback. The 2000s are here and are now perceived as “vintage,” which is comical. However, these bags were the ones to watch and truly the must-have of that time. Now, some are out of business, sold, acquired - but nonetheless, you can get your hands on one of these - keep them, find them, or sell them.
*Note* All bags below are the original bags - not the versions that have been reissued.
1. Marc Jacobs
Stam Bag: A quilted leather satchel with a kiss-lock closure and chain strap, this bag was a quintessential 2000s "It" bag and remains highly collectible. This bag was so heavy that you needed a chiropractor to go with it.
2. Miu Miu
Coffer Bag: A ruched leather hobo with braided handles and gold hardware that became a 2000s favorite. Everyone wanted this slouchy bag - it looked so good, loved, and worn.
3. Mulberry
Bayswater Bag: A structured, timeless tote that became a staple work bag for professional people long before there was a hybrid job market. This one was really hard to get - now they are pricey on the resale sites.
4. Chloé
Paddington Bag: With its signature oversized padlock and slouchy leather design, this was one of the most iconic bags of the 2000s. Again, this was the time of HARDWARE that was HEAVY. Can you see this silhouette making a comeback?
5. Balenciaga
City Bag (also known as the Motorcycle Bag): A slouchy, edgy design with distinctive hardware, it became an enduring icon. This bag is my case study for how to do an “IT BAG” and turn it into a legacy. I have a story to tell about this.
6. Proenza Schouler
PS1 Satchel: Though launched slightly after the 2000s (2008), this bag epitomized the effortless, understated luxury trend and remains highly desirable. The cool girl bag is also the inspiration for the red satchel for my book, “Savvy Suzanna’s Amazing Adventures in Handbags.” *News flash. The founders, Designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, have just left the brand. Getting your hands on one of these originals without them at the helm now will now have more value.
7. Botkier
Trigger Bag: A functional yet stylish bag with zipper details that became a sleeper hit during the 2000s. Love Monica (Botkier) - this brand was sold - you must listen to this podcast. It’s amazing.
8. Rebecca Minkoff
Morning After Bag (MAB): A roomy, practical satchel with edgy hardware, it became a cult favorite during the 2000s. Again - this is the origin story of the
brand. This bag is still very much part of her assortment. I still very much love this bag. It defines what makes a “hero bag” as a true case study.
9. Kate Spade
Sam Bag: A simple, boxy tote that was a favorite for its clean lines and practicality. OK - this bag was impossible to get your hands on. It also became the easiest to get pickpocketed because it didn’t have a zip-closure. But regardless - it’s still a classic. Listen to the podcast with Elyce Arons, the founder - it’s gripping!
10. Kooba
Sienna Bag: A slouchy hobo with braided leather details that was a hit among celebrities. If handbags could talk! Meet me on my paid account, and I can start sharing the handbag tea. Gurl… (P.S. thank you to those who signed up for the Paid content - I am going to start spreading some handbag tea there…)
This post brought back so many memories.
Amazing designer bags!
